Handling your Boat - Introduction

Successful boat handling is all about confidence, but confidence can only come from practice and a solid understanding of how boats behave and the effects of wind and tide.

In this section you will learn why various types of boats behave differently and how to learn about the particular characteristics of your boat. You will find out why the effects of wind and tide are critical to all slow speed boat handling, and how to move and turn your boat in confined spaces. You will also learn why it is important to assign tasks to the crew that are appropriate to their skills and physical abilities, and how to avoid discord when sailing with your family.

Once you have an understanding of these essentials, some time spent practising on your boat will quickly develop the boat handling skills you need for stress free berthing.
